Your Body’s Molecular Machines

August 1, 2019 posted by

These are tiny molecular machines, and they are doing this inside your body – right now. To understand why, we have to zoom out. Every day, in an adult human body, 50 to 70 billion of your cells die. Either they’re stressed, or damaged, or just old. But this is normal – in fact, it’s called “programmed cell death”. But, to make up for all these lost cells, right now, billions of your cells are dividing, essentially creating new cells. And that process of cell division, also called mitosis — well, it requires an army of tiny molecular machines. So, let’s take a closer look. DNA is a good place to start – the double helix molecule we always talk about. This is a scientifically accurate depiction of DNA, created by Drew Berry at the Walter and Eliza Hall Institute of Medical Research. If you unwind the two strands, you can see that each has a sugar-phosphate backbone connected to the sequence of nucleic acid base pairs, known by the letters A, T, G and C. Now, the strands run in opposite directions, which is important when you go to copy DNA. Copying DNA is one of the first steps in cell division. Here, the two strands of DNA are being unwound and separated by the tiny blue molecular machine called “helicase”. Helicase literally spins as fast as a jet engine! The strand of DNA on the right has its complementary strand assembled continuously. But the other strand is more complicated, because it runs in the opposite direction. So it must be looped out with its complementary strand assembled in reverse, section by section. At the end of this process, you have two identical DNA molecules, each one a few centimeters long, but just a couple nanometers wide. So, to prevent the DNA from becoming a tangled mess, it is wrapped around proteins called “histones”, forming a nucleosome. These nucleosomes are bundled together into a fiber known as chromatin, which is further looped and coiled to form a chromosome, one of the largest molecular structures in your body. You can actually see chromosomes under a microscope in dividing cells. Only then do they take on their characteristic shape. Otherwise, the DNA is more strewn inside the nucleus. The process of dividing a cell takes around an hour in mammals, so this footage is from a time-lapse. You can see how the chromosomes line up on the equator of the cell. Now, when everything is right, they are pulled apart into the two new daughter cells, each one containing an identical copy of DNA. Now, simple as this looks, the process is incredibly complicated and requires even more fascinating molecular machines to accomplish it. So, let’s look at a single chromosome. One chromosome consists of two sausage shaped chromatids, containing the identical copies of DNA made earlier. Each chromatid is attached to microtubule fibers, which guide and help align them in the correct position. The microtubules are connected to the chromatid at the kinetochore, here colored red. The kinetochore consists of hundreds of different proteins working together to achieve multiple objectives. In fact, it’s one of the most sophisticated molecular mechanisms inside your body. The kinetochore is central to the successful separation of the chromatids. It creates a dynamic connection between the chromosome and the microtubules. For a reason no one’s yet been able to figure out, the microtubules are constantly being built at one end and deconstructed at the other. While the chromosome is still getting ready, the kinetochore sends out a chemical “stop” signal to the rest of the cell, shown here by the red molecules, basically saying, “this chromosome is not yet ready to divide.” The kinetochore also mechanically senses tension. When the tension is just right, and the position and attachment are correct, all the proteins get ready, shown here by turning green. At this point, the stop signal broadcasting system is not switched off! Instead, it is literally carried away from the kinetochore, down the microtubules, by a dynein motor – that’s the walking guy. This is really what it looks like: it has long “legs” so it can avoid obstacles and step over the kinesins, molecular motors that walk in the opposite direction. Personally, I’m astounded by these tiny molecular machines, how they’re able to routinely and faithfully execute their functions billions of times over inside your body at this exact instant. I’m also amazed by the scientists who were able to work out how this happens in such detail that we could create realistic depictions of them, like you saw in the animations in this video. But, perhaps, the most amazing thing is just how much is left to be discovered, like, figuring out how exactly the chromatids are pulled to opposite ends of the cell. There is still so much that we don’t quite know. You know, what I find exciting is, that in science fiction, for decades, we’ve been writing about tiny nanobots that will be injected into our blood streams that can heal us. But, what this suggests, the existence of these tiny molecular machines inside us, it suggests that there isn’t a physical limit that would prevent that. And so, I think it’s pretty likely that, in future, we will be able to develop our own tiny molecular machines that will be able to repair our bodies better than they can repair themselves.

Mind boggling. Incredibly complex. However humans will NEVER be able to make something better. Never ever ever ever ever ever ever. The machines were programmed to heal us already. Anything humans tamper with they ultimately destroy. Instead of fantasizing about topping what God clearly has done, why not give him credit and admit your not as smart and never ever will be. We weren’t created to die, the cells capacity to continually repair indefinitely is there but shut off for some reason…cough cough the curse of sin. Honor King Yahweh, creator of heaven and earth.

  9. tyamada21 says:

The Law myoho-renge-kyo represents the identity of what some scientists refer to as the ‘unified field of all consciousnesses’. In other words, it’s a sound vibration that is the essence of all of existence and non-existence, the ultimate creative force behind planets, stars, nebulae, people, animals, trees, fish, birds, and all phenomena, manifest or latent. All matter and intelligence are simply waves or ripples manifesting to and from this core source. Consciousness (enlightenment) is itself the true creator of everything that is, ever was and ever will be, right down to the minutest particles of dust, each being an individual ripple or wave. The big difference between chanting Nam-myoho-renge-kyo and most other conventional prayers is that instead of depending on a ‘middleman’ to connect us to our state of enlightenment, we’re able to do it ourselves by tapping directly into it by way of self-produced sound vibration.

On the subject of ‘Who or What Is God?’, when we compare the concept of ‘God’, as a separate entity that is forever watching down on us, to Nichiren’s teachings, the true omnipotence, omniscience and omnipresence of what most people call ‘God’ is our enlightenment, which exists nowhere else but within us.

When the disciples asked Jesus where the Kingdom of God is, didn’t he tell them that it was within them?

Some say that ‘God’ is an entity that can never be seen. I think that the vast amount of information that is constantly being conveyed via electromagnetic waves gives us proof of how an invisible state of ‘God’ could actually exist. It’s widely known that certain data being relayed by way of electromagnetic waves has the potential to help bring about extraordinary and powerful effects, including instant global awareness of something or mass emotional reaction. As well as many other things, it’s also common knowledge that these waves can easily be used to detonate a bomb or to even enable NASA to control the movements of a robot as far away as the Moon or Mars. However, none of this is possible without a receiver to decode the information that is being transmitted. Without the receiver, the information would remain impotent.

In a very similar way, it’s important for us to have our ‘receiver’ switched on so that we can activate a clear and precise understanding of our life, all other life and what we and all else that exists truly is. Chanting Nam-myoho-renge-kyo helps us to achieve this because it allows us to reach into the core of our enlightenment and switch it on. That’s because the sound vibration of myoho-renge-kyo represents the combination of the three major laws that underlie all existence.

Myoho represents the Law of latency and manifestation (Nature) and consists of two alternating states. One state of myo is where everything in life that’s not obvious to us exists. This includes our stored memories when we’re not thinking about them, our hidden potential and inner emotions whenever they’re not being expressed, our desires, our fears, our wisdom, happiness, karma, and more importantly, our enlightenment. The other state, ho, is where everything in Life exists whenever it becomes obvious to us, such as when a thought pops up from within our memory, whenever we experience or express our emotions, or whenever a good or bad effect manifests from our karma. When anything becomes apparent, it simply means that it has come out of the state of ‘myo’ (dormancy/latency) and into a state of ho (manifestation). It’s simply the difference between consciousness and unconsciousness, being awake or asleep, or knowing and not knowing something.

The second law, renge, governs and controls the functions of myoho, ren meaning cause and ge meaning effect. The two laws of myoho and renge, both functions together simultaneously, as well as underlies all spiritual and physical existence.

The final and third part of the tri-combination, kyo, is what allows the law myoho to be able to integrate with the law renge. It’s the great, invisible thread of energy that fuses and connects together all Life and matter, as well as the past, present and future. It is often termed the Universal Law of Communication. Perhaps it could even be compared to the string theory that some scientists now suspect exists.

Just as our body cells, thoughts, feelings and all else are constantly fluctuating within us, everything in the world around us and beyond is also in a constant state of flux, in accordance with these three laws. In fact, more things are going back and forth between the two states of myo and ho in a single moment than it would ever be possible for us to calculate or describe. And it doesn't matter how big or small, important or trivial that anything may appear to be, everything that’s ever existed in the past exists now or will exist in the future, exists only because of the workings of myoho-renge-kyo.

These three laws are also the basis of the four fundamental forces and if they didn't function, neither we nor anything else could go on existing. Simply put, all forms of existence, including the seasons, day and night, birth, death and so on, are all moving forward in an ongoing flow of continuation, rhythmically reverting back and forth between the two universal states of myo and ho in absolute accordance with renge and by way of kyo. Even stars are dying and being reborn in accordance with the workings of what the combination myoho-renge-kyo represents.

Nam, or Namu, on the other hand, is a password or a key; it allows us to reach deep into our life and fuse with or become one with myoho-renge-kyo. On a more personal basis, nothing ever happens by chance or coincidence, it’s the causes that we’ve made in our past, or are presently making, that determine how these laws function uniquely in each of our lives from moment to moment, as well in our environment. By facing east, in harmony with the direction that the Earth is turning, and rhythmically chanting Nam-myoho-renge-kyo for a minimum of ten minutes daily, anyone can experience actual proof of its positive effects in their life.

In so doing, we can pierce through even the thickest layers of our karma and activate our Buddha Nature (the enlightened state). We’re then able to summon forth the wisdom needed to challenge, overcome and change our negative circumstances into positive ones. It brings forth the wisdom that can free us from the ignorance and stupidity that is preventing us from accepting and being proud of the person that we truly are, regardless of our race, colour, gender or sexual preference. We are also able to see and understand our circumstances and an environment more clearly, as well as attract and connect with any needed external beneficial forces and situations.

Actual proof soon becomes apparent to anyone who chants the words Nam-myoho-renge-kyo on a regular daily basis. Everything is subject to the law of Cause and Effect, so the strength of the result from chanting depends on dedication, sincerity and determination. To explain it more simply, the difference could be compared to making a sound on a piano, creating a melody, or producing a song and so on.

NB: There are frightening, disturbing sounds and there are tranquil and relaxing sounds. It's the emotional result from any sound that can trigger off a mood or even instantly change one. When chanting Nam-Myoho-Renge-Kyo each day you are producing a sound vibration that is the password to your true inner-self – this soon becomes apparent when you start reassessing your views on various things, such as your fears and desires etc. The important way to get the best result when chanting is not to see things in a conventional way (difficult to achieve but can be done), rather than reaching out to an external source, you need to reach into your own life and bring your needs and desires to fruition from within, including any help that you may need. Think of it as a seed within you that you are bringing sunshine and water to in order for it to grow, blossom and bring forth fruit or flowers. It’s important to understand that everything that we need in life, all the answers and potential to achieve our dreams, already exist within us. OLIVIA NEWTON-JOHN sings about Nam-myoho-renge-kyo

  42. szolanek says:

    It was hilarious!
It brings back my memories of more than 40 years ago, at age 14, I worked out a bunch of theories.
One of them was: "Evil builds life to exploit God"
If you have time: God would be like the Sun, it gives life energy. One need to have "chlorofil" to transform it. Evil did not have one, so created some machines, doing the job for him.
They broke down. He give them the capacity to repair themselves. He had to limit it, for after time the reparation does not pay.

So, he had to invent reproduction. Also, he had to go down with the size. It is better to have billions of little ones than one big one. These cells had to eat. They ate all they found and started dying from starvation.
So, he had to invent diversity. Different cells, feeding differently and eat each other's garbage or dead body.
Now, funny thing happened. The cells, receiving the conscious life energy, transform it (and loosing) to "non Godly" energy, started changing, tuning to consciousness. They started working together and creating mutual consciousness. Organism came to being. On the long way human is developed, who has a choice : turning to God consciousness or serving Evil.
Why to serve Evil? Evil is a bit yellow, for God stealing his show. Now, he still has the upper hands, for the organism are his domain, energy transformers. He has the POWER. Why?
For his system is created on cellular level and cells do work well (and feel "happy") when the energy is drained from them by Evil. If he rejects it, the energy flow stops, and the cell suffers as a cow which is not milked. He probably invented the force system earlier, in order to better function. The cell forcing it, creates more useful energy, will have priority in "milking". For he has a centre, where the energy collected and he need a steady flow. He gives priority for the better. It can explain, why evil people have so much energy and why is a fight for survival at all.
The beauty of this theory, that God doesn't know sh**it about you. As the Sun knows about the tree of fig.
I won't bore you with all the theories I had, but I was surprised in philosophy class, that I worked out earlier all Greek philosophies and discarded them as wrong. This one I discarded, also. I don't remember why. I was in picture by then, that the evolution theory is dumbest thing ever urinated by human brain, while evolution of creation … is quite transparent.

Can we not just be amazed at some things that exist, and not be the wise-asses that can always do it (eventually) better?

How, in any stretch of the imagination; can you (imagine to) make a machine that : (in order of increasing complexity)

    1) is the size of a few proteins
    2) have parts that can rotate 100 000 rpm and stop/reverse 100 000 rpm within a quarter turn
    2) can do useful work, accurately
    3) can position itself and be spatially aware in a dynamic biological environment
    4) is proton force powered
    5) can autonomously operate
    6) can work as part of a collective that is more complex than we know.
    7) how do you program/communicate/network these machines
Sure we'll get more clever and do more nano-tech, but these (and and many other) mechanisms are on another level of engineering entirely that we have yet to begin to grasp.

And if an error appears, it is fixed before it became a big deal.
It's so simple but also so complex, I can't see all of this and still do not believe on some high intelligence with high nanotech knowledge and resources doing the creation of life.
And it becomes more complex when the biologycal aspects meet the quimical and physicist world, doing an perfect harmony between them.
