De Foto a Vector | Illustrator Tutorial (Mouse)
Welcome to Dilustrare. In this video, we will do an tutorial video of vector from a photo using just our Mouse. So.. Let’s Illustrate! Open the program Illustrator and we are going to create a new document. I recommend you use a personalized size of 1500 px by 1500 px a resolution of 150ppp in RGB; and we create a work table.
For this tutorial, I will use a multi-instrumental artist called French Kiwi Juice. It is important that you pay attention to the quality of the photo you are going to use, because when you need to zoom in, you will be able to notice the details and also make the process easier; in this case, this photo has 110 pixels which is good, however, I found this other photo that has 1536 pixels, which is much better. I’ll now drag this photo to the work table and as you can see, when I zoom in to look at the details, we don’t lose quality. This will help very much. Okay, so, I like to work with the rows and layers in a larger size and this will help when we are looking for elements we want to edit more later on; it makes it easier this way. To do this, we open “Panel Options” for the layers in: “Row Size” – “Other” in the size 45 px. It is also important to lower the opacity of our photo. I recommend that it is between 75% – 90% This depends much on the photo that you are using… I will leave it at 80% First, I will create a new layer named: “Lines”
Now, what we will do is create a pencil for the strokes to make the outline. To create the pencil, we will use the circle tool and create the pencil in this shape… The important part about is pencil is that it is thin. Later, we can edit the thickness. We have to deactivate the option to “Adjust the Pixel”. When we deactivate this option, our strokes and even our adjustable knots can move freely. Having our strokes ready, we open our Pencil Panel; drag the stroke we have made, select “Art Pencil” and the only thing we edit will be the color and we will leave it in “Tints” This is to change the color of the stoke, if that is what we want to do. With the Pencil ready, we are going to use our pencil tool and select the pencil we created. The strokes we will make are very similar to the ones you make with a graphic tablet. If you have not used this tool before, I recommend to you to draw lines or little scribbles first… With practice you gain more agility in your hand with the mouse. Now, enter into the pencil options to increase the smoothness of the strokes. This will help the the strokes to be looser and more natural… If we put it at the maximum level we can edit as necessary: be it soft or ofter.
Now, we will start to draw the lines of the face. Try to make sure your strokes are the closest possible to the photo. This way, our illustration will look more like our person… For example, we have the case of the eye were we can note an extra detail. So, we will make a stroke here as well… And also, we will be constantly using our Direct Selection tool (A), because the strokes of the mouse are not always perfect. We can edit the strokes that we have done, and adjust the photo. I like to leave details of the face like the ears or the nose until about the end of the outline… Sometimes, we will take away the picture so that we are able to see just the lines and see how it’s coming along. To do the nostrils, we will use the Pencil tool and we will fill it in with black. Be sure that the colored part is filled and not drawn in. Here too we will open our pencil options. We will double click on the pencil and it will open this box. We have to disactivate the option: “Keep selected” and activate the option: “Fill in new pencil strokes” Click okay. What I am going to do now is expand our strokes of the eyes so that they don’t get in the way. Select the strokes and we will click “Object”, “Expand”, and use the eraser to eliminate the parts we don’t need. Good, much better! To do the eyebrows, we have to lower the thickness of the strokes. I like to use a very thin line to give it a more natural touch… I will leave it at 0.25. To do the eyebrows, we will just draw some strokes on the borders of the eyebrows and later we will use our pencil to fill them in. This part should have the shape of a long triangle because later we will use the pencil to blend the strokes with the filler and this gives it a natural touch to the eyebrows.. As you can see, it looks very good! And now, the same to the other side. Well, I had a little trouble with the battery in my mouse, but it’s fixed now. 😛 Note how the strokes look. Pretty good! This is the technique you can also apply in the same way with the beard and in the hair. With the penci,l we will do the borders of the beard and afterwards I will fill it in with the pencil and finally blend them with more pencil strokes. Remember to draw the fill with the triangle shape because it will be easier to blend the fill with the strokes. Actually, drawing the strokes in the eyebrows or a beard is an excellent way to practice and build more agility in your hand. It helps so much! Try to avoid just making copies and putting them in other places… Try to take your time to do these strokes because it will help you to gain agility and more practice! As you can see here, the strokes and fills are very unified. They look great! Now what we will do is the strokes of the face. And to do this, I will modify the smoothness of the pencil to the max. As I have mentioned, try to make it the closest you can to the photography… Here I quickly modified it so that the strokes coincide with the photo. For the hair, I will use only the pencil. And so that the hair blends into the head, I will do the same thing I did with the eyebrows: make the fill shape pointy. Because his hair is rastafari style, I will make the fills in shapes of circles. If the person has straight hair, the fills will be cleaner… The shape of the fill of the hair will obviously, depend on the hair. Try to look at it from far away to see how the strokes are looking in the illustration… I use the pencil tool to do the neck lines I will draw the pupils of the eyes and now use the pencil again Notice how the illustration looks now. Very good, right! However, the hair, I would like for the hair to look more natural and to do this, I will draw small hairs that will come out similar, the same thickness of 0.25 To make the job quicker, I will make copies of the strokes I have made… But if you are able to do it manually, remember that it will help with your hand agility! Up to now, it looks very good! A little looser… But I want to add a few more details in the hair; so that it looks more natural. Again, I will lower my stroke level to 0.1 and draw small hairs. Note the difference! It looks much better with these details. I will add more hairs in the beard and will draw the details of the face that I mentioned in the beginning. To do this, the thickness is at 0.20 Making these small lines and details, help our illustrations look much more realistic; normally we see them on the eyes and part of the nose and even around the mouth. If there is a facial expression on the face, like a smile, there will be more details… Careful with doing too much! Because it could make them look older; so, just a few would be al right. Now, I will draw some thicker strokes so that they look like eyelashes. This is more common in the case of the men. As you can see, it looks like he has eyelashes. In the same way, you can’t do too much because it could look strange. to finish the outline, we are going to close lines of the neck. There are different ways to finalize the neck. Today I will show you the one I use the most. In a different video, I will show you other ways to do it. In this occasion, it doesn’t matter how we close the neck because we will delete this line later. What we will do now, is take out a copy of this layer… We will drag the layer to the icon to create a new layer and in the original one, we will click on this circle to select all the elements of this layer. And now, expand all of the elements. Now we will go back to “Object”, “Expand” and after, we’ll go to the panel “Pathfinder” and put in the option “Unify” This will make all of the strokes come together as one. Now, we are going to put color to the illustration. In the same way, there are different ways to give the illustration color, but for me, the easiest and quickest way is this: We should create a square with the color of the skin. To do this, first edit the color in our panel of colors. With the rectangular tool, we create a square that covers all of the outline. Later, we will edit the color of the skin so that it looks closer to the original color of the photo. And we will send this square behind the photo. Select everything: the outline and the color. But, be sure that the other layer of the outline is locked. Once selected, again in our panel “Pathfinder” we will click on the option “Merge” and after we will ungroup the elements to eliminate what we aren’t going to use like this box and the small fills that we find in the hair. But, we will have to block the lines to delete them… Okay, so, we are going to click on the outline and go to the menu bar on: “Selection” we are going to click and go to: “Same” and “Color Fill” which selects all of the elements that have the same color fill. Once this is done, we will group and lock this layer. Now again, we go to the menu bar in: “Object”, “Lock” and “Lock Selection” With this, we are ready to eliminate the rest of the colors we don’t need. To see if we have eliminated everything, we select all of the elements with the shortcut command + A (Cmd+A) or Control + A (Cntr + A) and we keep holding control and It will show the ones that are selected and we eliminate what we don’t need. In this layer of outline, we can take away the visualization because later on we are going to use it again. Because my image is is black and white, I will use the one that is in color. This one! I used a recut mask to focus solely on the face Let’s continue with coloring the illustration To edit just the skin color, select the color of the skin and we will do what we did before: select all of the elements with the same color fill. Let’s go to the menu bar in “Edit”, “Edit Colors” “Recolor with Preset” and “Color Harmony” And we edit is depending on the color of the skin. We can also make another edition in the same menu bar, but this time we click on “Adjust color Balance” What I do now is edit all of the colors together so that they look much better. This is the first part of the process of the illustration. In the second part, I will explain the process of how to shade. Also, final details like the hair and the highlights. I invite you to continue and watch the second part on this channel
